TBR FYE Ambassador Session 3: Increasing Student Motivation in FYE (or the classroom)
- Shared screen with speaker view

11:36
Welcome to everyone! Lauren and I are happy you are here. We hope you can have at least 1 take away from today's session to apply to whatever course(s) you teach. Welcome!

12:27
Please mute your computers until speaking :)

14:09
I teach writing. At the beginning of the semester we discuss how to get good at any skill, whether sports, music, art, or writing etc.

14:38
We teach GRIT in our curriculum as a foundational start to the course.

15:11
I find that when they are successful, they become more motivated as their confidence grows. I love it when they realize that learning can be fun.

15:35
Also teaching our faculty to give grace, show empathy, and be vulnerable with your students. Bene Brown has a great video I can send to you all.

15:47
please send the link, Marci!

16:17
For my online students, I try to comment on their first set of assignments so that they know I'm a real person they can contact.

16:46
I like that..."the power of 'yet'".

18:21
My online students are required to be on teams and produce videos where they discuss class material - then I comment on their discussion

18:56
BTW, this week's Monday Mentor has a great exploration of online, interactive apps. Definitely related to enhancing relationships, academics, relationships.

19:16
CTAT sent out email to RSCC folks today.

22:49
I'm curious if you have analytics, Nancy, on how many students open and use the tilted instruction guides.

28:09
The way you do ungrading is an interesting take. Definitely have to try that.

29:45
For tcher/student data chats, having preplan sheet is helpful... with questions/statements so students can think about that ungrading or/"what I learned" before the chat.

34:34
In my online sections I add discussions by the base groups- then it allows them to "talk" through the topics with their base groups.

37:06
For my asynchronous section, Marci, I have CTAT set those base groups up, too, but I'll remind you about the 5 apps in this week's Monday Mentor. They have interactive methods students can collaborate, and the presenter shares authentic tips.

38:33
That's an excellent idea, Marci! Everyone, if you see comments from Ashley, Ann, etc., please reach out to these folks joining our session today. They are the experts :)

40:42
The beauty of community college... ability to have smaller classes and get to know our students.

41:32
Yes, Ann. We have such opportunity in front of us!

45:21
I create a videos on Fridays for my on-line students and they seem to like this- which gives them information. Also this is when I asked students to please email me and we can set-up another time to meet individually, via Zoom, or phone, or in person.

45:43
This is a great idea, Nancy!

46:28
I think I'm going to have to do this for my online students. Some of them get overwhelmed before reading the instructions.

48:05
I tried the checklist, but I only had 2 or 3 students who actually used it. 🥲

49:21
For my asynchronous, Wed. Round Up vids summarizes & reminds due dates (what to do now'or 'how to do' reminders).

49:27
Do you keep the weekly folders open after you assign them?

51:08
This has been so helpful, so very applicable, Nancy & Lauren. THANK YOU!!!

52:12
Thank you, this was useful!

53:27
What I'll do is have extra assignment built in that replaces similar assignments to make up for one or two assignments they have missed.

54:17
Mine online students have 3 attempts on each quiz and I tell them it's practice for the tests - its very low stakes.

58:35
Thank you for sharing.

59:25
Thank you!

59:37
Thanks ladies! Enjoy your weeks!
